UK anaerobic digestion business Biogen has plans to build at least four or five facilities this year.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Biogen chief executive Richard Barker said that rising landfill tax is making AD a more attractive prospect.

He added that the company plans to invest around £30 million this year and through to 2014 in projects with some of this funding already in place.

As a result of this, he expects Biogen’s total food waste processing capacity to have doubled to 200,000 tonnes per year.

He also revealed that Biogen is in discussions with potential partners about future AD projects. It currently has a number of its own plants and is also working on local authority-procured AD plants primarily in Wales.

Last year, Kier Group bought half of Biogen for £24.4 million.
