Four campaign groups have called for a levy on single use carrier bags to be introduced in England.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), Keep Britain Tidy, the Marine Conservation Society and Surfers Against Sewage have joined together to launch the ‘Break the Bag Habit’ campaign.

The groups want to see a reduction in the 8 billion bags issued during 2011, which was 5.4 per cent higher than in 2010.

CPRE Stop the Drop campaign manager Samantha Harding said: “Bag levies have been proven to work in Ireland and Wales.

“A levy is coming soon to Northern Ireland and Scotland is already consulting on introducing one. Why must the English countryside be the last to benefit from good environmental policies?”
