Chinese imports of PET slumps but metal and paper purchases up in November

The amount of PET chips imported into China fell in November while all other materials increased.

PET chip imports were at 11,954 tonnes, which was the second lowest figure of the year and was down on October’s 15,789. Only February was lower at 9,604 tonnes, but this coincided with Chinese New Year. The value of this material was $22.26 million (£14.27 million). The total imports of PET year on year so far in 2011 compared to 2010 are down 20.7 per cent.

ABS increased to 153,753 tonnes in November from 130,105 a month before. The value of this material was $333.2 million (£212.95 million).

Paper and paperboard imports into China were up to 250,000 tonnes in November from 240,000 tonnes in October. This was worth $324 million (£208 million).

Imports of scrap copper jumped up to 430,000 tonnes from 380,000 in October. This was worth a total of £1.49 billion (£0.96 billion).

Aluminium imports increased to 280,000 tonnes from the 220,000 tonnes seen in both September and October. This was also the highest level seen so far in 2011. The value of this material was $487.3 million (£312 million).
