Communities Secretary Eric Pickles has approved the planning application of Herefordshire and Worcestershire County Council waste contractor Mercia Waste Management for an energy from waste plant.

The “EnviRecover” plant will be situated in Hartlebury near to Kidderminster and will treat 200,000 tonnes of residual waste per year providing up to 15.5MW of electricity and will also be able to provide heat, steam or cooling for local businesses and industries.

Mercia director John Plant said: “The Public Inquiry into our proposals to build EnviRecover at Hartlebury Trading Estate was an important step for a facility that is critical for the environmentally sustainable management of waste for the councils. It represents a solution that will be both effective and economically sustainable. We are delighted that the Secretary of State has reviewed the evidence and found in our favour.

“The planning process leading to this decision has been rigorous and thorough, ensuring broad local public consultation and involvement. This gives confidence that this is the right way to ensure more sustainable and cost-effective waste and resource management for Herefordshire and Worcestershire.”
