A fire has broken out at an EMR scrap yard in the Nechells district of Birmingham.

About 100 tonnes of metal caught fire at the site on Monday with 45 firefighters tackling the blaze.

West Midlands Fire Service group commander Jim Sinnett said that the fire may take several days to put out because water will not penetrate the metal, so it has to be turned and pulled apart.

He added: “This is going to take some days maybe to be fully extinguished. But as long as we have got water in there and it doesn’t spread and cause any further damage we will be quite satisfied with that.”

Firefighters have concluded that the blaze started accidentally.
