Eleven fire crews from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service were called to the blaze that broke out on Sunday afternoon.

By Monday, the fire was out and firefighters were damping down the material.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service incident commander-divisional officer Jon Payne said: “The fire was deep seated within the building. Crews are using two main jets and a ground monitor to extinguish the fire.”

Nordic Recycling is owned by Forth Ports, which also owns the Port of Tilbury.

A spokesman for Forth Ports said: “No one was injured. There is no disruption to the port and all services are operating as normal now. At this stage, the full extent of the damage and the cause of the fire are unknown.”
