The BIR Ferrous division has revealed that global steel scrap use as a raw material for steelmaking was unchanged at around 570 million tonnes in 2012.

However, due to a 1.2 per cent increase in world crude steel output, the proportion of steel scrap used in crude steel production fell from 37.3 per cent to 36.8 per cent.

In the 4th edition of World Steel Recycling in Figures, launched at the BIR convention in Shanghai this week, it was also revealed that there was a scrap usage decrease in China, EU 27, Japan and Russia in 2012, while USA and Turkey saw an increase.

Global annual scrap use in iron and steel foundries has amounted to between 56 million and 74 million tonnes in recent years, according to the report.

In 2012, the total external steel scrap trade worldwide reached 106.6 million tonnes.

Turkey remains the world’s largest importer, taking 22.4 million tonnes last year.
