When the first crew from Johnstone Community Fire Station arrived, they found a large quantity of recyclate was well alight.

In a statement,  Strathclyde Fire & Rescue said: “Network Rail stopped trains on the adjacent Glasgow to Ayr railway line and air traffic control officers were informed to alert pilots flying in and out of Glasgow International Airport.

“At the height of the fire 12 appliances were involved in efforts to control the flames, and it was not until nearly 3am that fire service activity could be scaled down.”

The fire service will now hold an investigation into the cause of the fire.
