Labour’s MP for Bristol East is to introduce a Food Waste (Reduction) Bill in the House of Commons on 9 September.

The Ten Minute Rule Motion from Kerry McCarthy MP will seek to ensure that more wasted food is available to charities for redistribution to people living in poverty.

Under the terms of the Bill, the Government would need to introduce incentives to implement and encourage observance of the food waste reduction hierarchy; to encourage individuals, businesses and pubic bodies to reduce the amount of food they waste; and require large supermarkets, manufacturers and distributors to reduce their food waste by no less than 30% by 2025.

As the Bill is using the Ten Minute Rule Motion designed for backbenchers to suggest legislation to Parliament, unless it gets the backing of the Government, it is unlikely to become full law.
