A report from the OECD has shown that using nanomaterials in tyre production could make them more sustainable.

Undertaken by Ricardo-AEA with support from Eastern Research Group, Nanotechnology and Tyres: Greening Industry and Transport, shows that use of nanomaterials could improve wear resistance leading to a longer life for tyres meaning they would be more resource efficient over their lifecycle.

The study also found that use of these materials could potentially decrease tyre rolling resistance, which would improve vehicle fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

However, the OECD report said that tools and frameworks are needed to support decision making for assessing the economic, social and environmental impacts of new nanomaterials in tyre production.
