A new agreement has been signed by the GMB union and Covanta Energy which will see both working closely on all of Covanta’s projects.

The basis for the agreement is to mutually support each other through the development and operations of facilities, a commitment to safety, the environment, ensuring Covanta employees have the right to be collectively represented by GMB and a successful future for both organisations.

This agreement will begin later this year when Covanta expects to start construction of its Ince Park energy-from-waste facility in the north west of England.

During construction, there are expected to be 566 new jobs created. The agreement with GMB will help ensure an efficient, safe and environmentally secure site.

GMB national secretary for energy Gary Smith said: “The national recognition agreement with Covanta is an important one for GMB members. The agreement is about more that employee relations, important as they are.

“At the core of our relationship there are commitments to work together over safety and environment, issues that are important to those who build and operate the plants as well as the local communities the plants will serve.”

After the signing of the agreement Covanta will now brief the relevant GMB regions about the objectives of its projects. This will allow both GMB and Covanta to agree on areas of common interest and concern during the development and operation of facilities.

Covanta Energy managing director Malcolm Chilton added: “This is a really important milestone in Covanta’s history in the UK. As a company we are committed to operating our facilities to the highest standards, especially with respect to the environment and safety.

“We look forward to working closely with the GMB to help us realise these objectives.”
