Prices for OCC keep rising, and there was a bit of momentum behind LDPE film grades this week.

In addition, some metals also increased in value.

But for packaging grades, the upcoming Q1 data from the National Packaging Waste Database may change the relatively stable PRN/PERN market as people react to the data.

Indeed, while there wasn’t huge movement this week, every single PRN/PERN grade changed in price as some sought to trade before the data comes out.

Otherwise, things are ticking along in the market with demand seeming to outstrip supply to an extent at the moment for many grades.

The pound was unchanged against the dollar at $1.24 this week, but down a cent at €1.16.

Recycled plastics

Although the value of the plastic PRN/PERN came down by around £10 per tonne this week, it didn’t affect the price of packaging grades.

A little more demand was coming from Europe especially as buyers sought to restock after Easter. In particular, higher grade film was harder to get hold of and so was attracting a bit of a premium.

All eyes will now be on Monday when the Q1 data is expected to be published to see what this will mean for both the PRN/PERN price and physical price over the coming weeks.

Recycled paper

A year ago, the price of OCC was broadly similar to what it was this week. However, the PRN/PERN price this week is just over £7 now compared to £28 then. OCC prices are strong at the moment.

Demand is coming from various areas with UK and Europe still good, South East Asia taking material, and some beneficial freight rates helping to bring India back into the market.

Mixed hasn’t responded in quite the same way, but demand remains steadily good.

Recycled metals

Copper is in strong demand at the moment, with prices rising by £150 per tonne. Brass was also up by £50 per tonne, but all other grades remained the same.
