Anaerobic digestion and facilities generating heat from commercial waste are now eligible to receive the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) subsidy.

The RHI is now available for on-site combustion of biogas from anaerobic digestion at all scales (it was previously limited to <200kW), and waste-based heating projects using commercial and industrial as well as municipal waste.

There is also new support for biomass combined heat and power, while large biomass projects receive increased support.

Preliminary registration has also begun for biomethane plants that will enable developers to plan their projects.

However, the degression triggers, where the support ends once a certain amount of technology is supported, has been reduced for biomethane injection.

Support under the scheme has also been extended for geothermal heating and provided for the first time for air source heat pumps.

Renewable Energy Association chief executive Nina Skorupska said: “The RHI is now a truly world-leading renewable energy policy. Almost all renewable heat applications are now supported under the scheme, offering businesses greater choice than ever before on how to sustainably meet their heating needs.

“Local authorities and housing associations can also benefit from the expanded support for technologies that can feed district heating schemes, such as biomass, geothermal and energy from waste.”
