Specsavers has collected 6,000 glasses frames since launching a recycling scheme at three stores in the North West last year.

The optician chain teamed up with recyclers MYgroup to install collection boxes at its outlets in Burnley, Nelson and Colne.

Customers can drop off unwanted glasses and contact lenses as well as various items of packaging through the scheme.

Specsavers Burnley store director Mark Addison said: “We’d like to thank all our customers who have helped us exceed our expectations for the initiative.

“We plan to continue recycling as much as we can to help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

“Customers can drop off metal and plastic glasses and sunglasses, as well as contacts lenses and accessories, including blister packs, glasses cases, contact lens cases and solution bottles.”

Once collections bins are full, items are sent to MYgroup’s recycling plant in Hull.

Glasses and contact lenses are repurposed into a wide range of items such as furniture and garden accessories.
