The Chinese Government has announced that it will scrap 6 million high polluting vehicles before the end of the year in order to bring down air pollution.

In a mandatory ruling, vehicles that do not meet exhaust emissions standards will be scrapped, which will also lead to more metal being available for recycling.

Of the vehicles that will be taken off the road this year, 20 per cent of these will be in the municipalities of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Province, as these have all suffered from smog.

Next year, China intends to scrap a further 5 million vehicles in economically developed regions such as the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta and the Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei regions according to an action plan published by the State Council.

The action plan said: “Strengthening control on vehicle emissions will be a major agenda item for the country’s energy savings, emissions reductions, and low-carbon development during the next two years.”
