Improving quality will remain a major focus for DS Smith despite its disappointment at the outcome of the Judicial Review.

As one of the members for the Campaign for Real Recycling, DS Smith challenged the Defra and Welsh Government of the revised Waste Framework Directive about whether commingled recycling was allowed under the rules.

However, it lost the Judicial Review last week when Judge Hickinbottom decided that the sorting method was consistent with the directive.

DS Smith Recycling European sales and purchasing director Jim Malone said: “We are naturally disappointed that the judge in this case has not supported the view that the current interpretation will impact on the quality of recyclate.

“As a company absolutely committed to zero waste to landfill, we want to promote best practice in recycling at all times. The Waste Framework Directive is an opportunity for all to source segregate waste and we will continue to pursue best practice with our customers in order to get the most from our waste streams.”
