A fire at a recycling company in North Lanarkshire has damaged equipment worth £500,000 and been described as “suspicious” by police.

CCTV cameras at New Town Skip Hire in Motherwell have captured evidence showing that two men climbed a fence before torching material around a custom-made sorting machine worth £500,000.

Detective Sergeant Scott Wilson of Strathclyde Police said: “The premises is owned by a recycling company and the damage is mainly to a high value piece of machinery which is estimated to be worth half a million pounds. Officers are checking the extensive CCTV from the yard and carrying out enquiries in the local area.”

New Town Skip Hire employs 24 people and the company has said it may have to make some redundancies as a result of the blaze.
