West Midlands Police have sealed off a salvage yard in Erdington, Birmingham this morning after a person was found dead following a car fire.

Police were alerted to the incident when West Midlands Fire Service was called to the scrap yard just before midnight where a small number of cars were alight. After further examination of the scene, a body was found inside one of the cars which had been on fire.

The yard has been cordoned off and forensic examinations are underway to determine the cause of the fire. A post mortem will be conducted to determine a cause of death and further information to the deceased person, who has not been identified.

West Midlands Police detective sergeant Andy Bradley said: “We are at the early stage of our inquiry and the death is being treated as unexplained as we try to determine how the person died, and the fire began.”
