Jump in PRN values surprises markets

A number of PRN grades jumped up in price last week causing confusion in the physical material markets.

While plastic and aluminium PRNs had reached highs beyond £50 per tonne in recent weeks, paper, wood, steel and recovery PRNs all increased.

For paper, wood and recovery, this was as a result of a reclassification of energy from waste plants making the recovery target more difficult to meet.

While plastic and aluminium PRN values have helped to support the value of the physical materials in recent weeks, as yet, there hasn’t been an impact on the price of paper, wood, steel and recovery PRNs.

However, this week should show whether there will be any impact.

Indeed, both paper and plastic physical grades were largely stable last week.

Most scrap metal grades saw price falls last week however.
