The Thai firm that bought the mothballed Teesside Cast Products steel plant in Redcar, Cleveland will open the site soon after beginning the recruitment process for workers.

Around 1,000 jobs will be created at the facility, with the recruitment process beginning next month. It is expected that the plant will re-open shortly after in October.

Last year, Corus, now Tata Steel, mothballed the plant after losing a major contract. It was bought by Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI), which is Thailand’s biggest steel producer.

Business secretary Vince Cable said: “The creation of these 1,000 new jobs is a fantastic boost to SSI UK, to Redcar and the North East.

“SSI UK has made incredible progress since it bought the steel-making plant in March this year for £320 million and safeguarding 800 jobs. Teesside can look forward to large-scale steel production once again, producing 3.6 million tonnes of steel in the first year.”
