Police have arrested three men on suspicion of arson following a fire at Jigsaw Recycling near Middlesbrough.

Over 12,000 tonnes of wood caught fire at the wood recycling plant on Saturday morning in a blaze that is expected to last several days.

The three men are believed to be aged between their late teens and early 20’s.

A police spokeswoman said: “Emergency services and the local authority have been working together for more than 24 hours to extinguish the fire, to minimise disruption to the local community and to provide reassurance and information to residents.

“Current advice is that this is likely to remain a protracted incident for Cleveland Fire Brigade and residents can expect to see more smoke plumes as firefighters continue to dampen down the flames.”
