The quantities of HDPE and PP bottles that are collected for recycling has fallen and need to improve to meet targets, according to Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE).

At the Plastics Recycling Expo in Telford last month, PRE vice chair Herbert Snell said that quantities of these materials collected for recycling has dropped considerably in many EU countries.

He warned that collection and high quality processing and sorting of these materials will need to be achieved to meet recycling targets of 45 per cent.

The capacity to process bales of HDPE and PP is currently higher than the material collected, so there is room to improve with current infrastructure.

He added that these waste fractions can develop many new plastics markets for the use of rHDPE and rPP and innovations are still possible including in food grade applications.
