Chocolate maker Cox & Co has created paper packaging for its products.

The UK firm said the breakthrough would allow it to phase out plastics and give consumers wrapping they could recycle at the kerbside.

Cox & Co has been working for 18 months to produce a paper flow-wrap to replace its compostable polymer-based packaging.

After working closely with a paper manufacturer in Sweden, and reconfiguring its machinery, the company saw its first paper-wrapped bars roll off the production line this month.

The chocolate contained in the new packaging has at least a year’s shelf life.

“Consumers are now actively seeking brands that take sustainability seriously and products that are easy to recycle,” said Cox & Co founder Gavin Cox.

“Chocolate is a popular household purchase and yet so little of the packaging can be easily recycled at kerbside.

“We are set to change all that with our exciting new packaging, which offers a neat and tidy result without the use of plastic.”
