A five-year plan has been launched by the European Environment Agency (EEA) that will see it seek to improve knowledge on resource efficiency and monitor progress towards European targets.

Although the priorities of the five-year plan include resource efficiency, making the transition to a low-carbon economy and a sustainable eco-system, it will be resource efficiency that is its key focus for 2014.

The EEA’s plan will work with the 7th Environmental Action Programme that was launched by the European Union shortly before Christmas.

In a New Year message, EEA executive director Hans Bruyninckx said: “We will be doing the traditional monitoring and reporting of the different environmental policies in Europe, which we have been doing for a long time.

“But we will also do more fundamental assessments and give direction as to whether we are moving towards that low-carbon, resource efficient and eco-system resilient Europe that we want for the future.”
