A £2 million contract to recycle 96 per cent of the waste from the Metro Centre in Gateshead has been won by O’Brien Waste Recycling Solutions.

All of the 4,500 tonnes of waste from the shopping mall, believed to be the biggest shopping centre in Britain, will be diverted to processing facilities. The centre currently has a 70 per cent recycling rate.

O’Brien will also provide training to staff who work at the Metro Centre on how to recycle effectively.

The company has bought another two vehicles for use on the contract.

Metro Centre environmental services manager Dave Dixon said: “The partnership between O’Brien and Metro Centre will help to reinforce all of our waste management practices that we have undertaken over recent years. O’Brien will also allow us to achieve one of our main targets, which is to send zero waste to landfill. This was a major factor in our decision to enlist O’Brien to work with us.”
