The Palm Paper newsprint mill in King’s Lynn, Norfolk has seen an impact from the closure of the News of the World newspaper.
With the newsprint market already shrinking with a 7.5 per cent reduction in the first half of this year, the closure of the newspaper reduced the market by a further 3 per cent.
Palm Paper chief executive Wolfgang Palm told the Eastern Daily Press newspaper that when the mill opened last year the market required 2.2 million tonnes, but it now only needed 1.15 million tonnes of newsprint paper.
He added: “News International is considering the launch of the Sun on Sunday which would potentially mitigate any loss. Meanwhile, other Sunday publications may benefit from the additional sales as a result of the News of the World closure.”
Palm also revealed that he was considering a £50 million investment in a gas-fuelled combined heat and power plant at the mill, or alternatively buying electricity from a King’s Lynn energy from waste facility if and when it is built.
