Spanish paper and packaging firm SAICA has bought Manchester-based Houghton’s Waste Paper.

This follows its purchase of Cutts Recycling and Stirling Fibre Group last year, and is a further attempt by the company to secure supply of material to its mill in Partington, Manchester.

Houghton’s has been bought by SAICA Natur, which is its waste management business, and will supply around 25,000 tonnes of paper to SAICA Paper, which runs the mill.

This means that SAICA Natur will handle around 425,000 tonnes of material.

SAICA Natur managing director Simon Dymoke said: “I am pleased to see the continuation of SAICA Natur’s expansion. The acquisition of Houghton’s Waste Paper will provide our PM11 project in Partington with a local supply of raw material, which helps us in our aim to cut carbon emissions across the SAICA Group.

“We are pleased to be at the stage where we are able to provide our UK customers with the benefits of SAICA’s full product life cycle approach to packaging and waste management, which we’ve been working towards for some time.”
