Spanish multi-national paper and packaging manufacturer SAICA has produced its first containerboard for sale at its £300 million mill at Partington in Manchester.

The state-of-the-art mill is the company’s first in the UK and was granted planning permission in 2008.

Around 400,000 tonnes of 100 per cent recycled containerboard will be produced at the mill each year from around 450,000 tonnes of used paper.

The mill will also be the principle source of paper for SAICA PACK operations within the UK and Ireland.

SAICA project director for the mill Erkki Savolainen said: “Everybody involved in the project is delighted that we have been able to produce paper here ahead of schedule. It’s a huge boost for Partington and we’re working hard to become a long-term part of the community, employing people from the local community where we can.”

The facility also includes a dedicated combined heat and power plant to generate clean energy.
