The company had planted to demolish existing buildings on the former Merseyside Coatings site in Widnes, and wished to build a two-storey office building, weighbridge, cabin and area for external machinery.

Once operating, it would have dealt with 50,000 tonnes of scrap per year.

Halton Council received 43 objections to the facility including one from local MP Derek Twigg.

The council planner’s report to the development control committee had recommended that the application should be rejected on the basis that it was too close to residential properties.

EMR withdrew the application before the committee met.
