The Environment Agency is set to publish a draft environmental permit for a proposed energy from waste plant at New England Quarry near Ivybridge in Devon after an application was submitted by Viridor.

Viridor was shortlisted to build and operate a facility for the South West Devon Waste Partnership, but was beaten to the contract by MVV Environment Devonport in Plymouth.

However, Viridor decided to construct the facility anyway.

The Environment Agency has decided to publish the draft permit along with a draft decision document because it is satisfied that the proposed facility could be constructed and operated in a way that ensures a high level of protection is provided to human health and the environment.

A consultation will now run until 12 October on the new facility, with the Environment Agency hosting a public surgery in Ivybridge on 4 October.

Environment Agency environment manager Judy Proctor said: “This further consultation period is part of the permitting process. It allows us to check that nothing has changed since the original application and that nothing has been missed or overlooked in the draft permit before we make our final decision.”
