A £20 million food grade rPET facility is set to be built in Cheshire on the site of Peel L&P Environmental’s energy and resource hub Protos.

This facility, which will be constructed and operated by Enviroo, will use Erema and Sorema Technologies to sort and wash PET packaging to create flakes and then rPET pellets.

The facility is the next plot proposed for the Plastic Park at Protos, following consent of a plastic to hydrogen facility earlier this year.

Enviroo chief executive and founder Ahmed Detta said: “The UK produces over 13 billion plastic bottles a year but currently only recycles around 50% of them. This facility will take these bottles and create a new material that can be used to create new food grade packaging products, reducing the need for virgin plastic and diverting waste from landfill.”

Planning permission for the new facility in Ellesmere Port will now be sought from Cheshire West & Chester Council.

Peel L&P Environmental also hope that a materials recycling facility and a plastic recycling facility will be built on the 54 acre Protos site. The company hopes to also develop similar industrial energy and resources parks across the UK.
