Sportswear brand adidas has said that it will only use recycled polyester from 2024 instead of the virgin material.

The German company will use at least 50% recycled polyester in its polymer-based trainers, tops and tracksuits this year.

This year, it also plans to make 15 to 20 million pairs of shoes with plastic waste collected from beaches and coastal regions. Last year it made 11 million pairs of shoes from this material.

adidas also plans to launch a fully recyclable training shoe called Futurecraft Loop by 2021. It has been in the test phase since 2019.

It also plans to introduce more circular processes such as the Infinite Play programme it launched in the UK last year that allows consumers to return adidas footwear to be resold or recycled in return for a voucher to use in its stores or online.

Although it hasn’t used plastic bags in its shops since 2016, adidas plans to ensure that all packaging materials used to transport its products to stores will be made from recyclable materials.
