Aldi is to remove protective sleeves from the corks of its own-label wines to slash packaging waste.
The budget supermarket said the move, which has been trialled for a year, would apply to 46 products including Côtes du Rhone, Rioja Reserva and Atlantique Rosé by the end of 2025.
Aldi said the rollout would remove 38 tonnes of aluminium and plastic from its shelves annually.
Luke Emery, national sustainability director at the German supermarket’s UK arm, said sustainability was “a priority for our customers”.
He added: “We’re always looking for new ways to reduce packaging and offer more sustainable choices.
“Launching wines with naked corks is a step in the right direction, and we’re proud to be the first supermarket to introduce this change across our entire range of own-brand quality corked wines.”
Aldi earlier this year launched a partnership with The Hidden Sea to boost removal of plastic from the ocean.
The supermarket last year said its own-brand gin would be sold in paper bottles, after first stocking wine in the fibre-based packaging.
