Aldi’s own-brand gin is to be sold in paper bottles as the budget supermarket continues its packaging sustainability drive.
Greyson’s London Dry Gin will be available in the lightweight fibre-based 70cl containers from this week.
It follows Aldi launching paper wine bottles and recycled-plastic soft drinks containers earlier this year.
More than nine-tenths of the gin bottle is made from recycled paperboard, and it is lined with a food-grade pouch.
Aldi said the container, made in partnership with Suffolk-based Frugalpac, was easy to carry, shatterproof and recyclable.
It is also five times lighter and a fifth cheaper than a standard glass bottle, according to the supermarket.
Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi UK, said the switch was “a significant step towards fostering sustainable change”.
She added: “The paper bottled wine has been a hit with shoppers and we’re excited to extend this out into the spirits category.”
