Plans for a £180 million gasification plant at Hooton Park in south Wirral are to be resubmitted by Bioessence.

The company, which is also planning to build a facility at Rainham in East London, originally received planning permission in 2008, but has revised the design of the facility and as a result needs to reapply for planning consent.

Bioessence wishes to build a 50MW gasification facility which will process 260,000 tonnes of pre-treated commercial waste using Metso technology.

Its business development director Ralf Trottnow said: “The technology proposed has been fully appraised by the Environment Agency and has received a full environmental permit for operation at our East London site in Rainham.

“We will not be requiring any extra land, but the gasification process will need a taller building than we originally sought permission for. We have, therefore, decided it is appropriate to recommence the full planning process in the light of the change in visual impact.”

The facility is being developed in partnership with Canadian-based company ATCO Power.
