Turkey is set to get its first plastic chemical recycling plant following a deal between Biotrend Energy and Honeywell.
Biotrend Energy will provide the feedstock while Honeywell will provide its UOP UpCycle Process Technology to convert mixed waste plastics into new polymers.
Two parallel 30,000 tonnes per year units of modular design will be built in the Izmir region of the country. It is expected to be running in 2025.
Biotrend Çevre ve Enerji Yatırımları A.Ş board member Salih Tuncer Mutlucan said: “There is an increasing demand for recycled plastic products as a result of the circular economy commitments made by the world’s leading companies, and Honeywell UOP UpCycle Process Technology can support Biotrend’s efforts to increase recovery volumes of circular materials.
“The advanced recycling facility we plan to establish in Türkiye will be one of the first in Türkiye and in the world, the facility will be able to recycle original raw plastic material and enable a true circular economy.”
Currently, Biotrend Energy is only able to capture a small amount of plastic for mechanical recycling with the remainder going to produce Refuse Derived Fuel or to landfill.
The company processes 4.5 million tonnes of waste across 18 facilities in the country.
