BIR paper division president Jean-Luc Petithuguenin has said that some mills are planning price cuts for June.

In the latest BIR World Mirror for Recovered Paper, he said that the “market had been rebalancing itself in May, but for how long” following low collections of cardboard in the first quarter of 2021.

He added that European mills were seeing inflated stocks as export markets in Asia limited European purchases due to high shipping rates, and this was likely to see a price cut occur for June.

Looking forward to the rest of the year, he said: “We anticipate an economic boom by this summer – a recovery that will bring not only an increase in collection volumes, but also even more orders for our customers who will continue to produce for China. This remains a year of significant price tension.”
