The Chinese government is to pilot a statistical gathering exercise that will require businesses to provide data on recycling and energy use.

Chinese National Bureau of Statistics director of the energy statistics department Wen Jianwu said that pilots will begin this year in five provinces including Shandong and Shanxi with results published periodically.

He added: “The basic statistical indexes of greenhouse gas emissions are under joint study with the National Development and Reform Commission. The main target group of this survey will be enterprises. It also covers transport and some public institutions. Basic statistical indexes will be launched in line with international standards.”

As revealed by SCM in November, China plans to have a 70 per cent recycling rate by 2015.
