Plastic bottle recycler Closed Loop Recycling wants cross party support for its “We Need Your Bottles’ campaign after it was officially launched during a visit by Environment Minister Lord Taylor.

During the visit to its facility in East London, Closed Loop Recycling chief executive Chris Dow emphasised the importance of instigating consumer and industry change in supporting the domestic recycling industry, which will also help it to achieve the 42 per cent recycling target set by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs earlier this year.

Chris Dow highlighted the need for a mandatory MRF Code of Practice, greater transparency of destination and a full review of the PRN system which he argues does not currently create a level playing field for the UK industry. He is urging other MPs from all the other political parties to back the campaign and by doing so, back British green jobs.

Lord Taylor said: “I am delighted to see the work that Closed Loop Recycling is doing to recycle more plastic bottles which is not just great for the environment but also for green job creation and the wider economy.”

Chris Dow added: “We’re delighted to receive the waste minister’s backing for our campaign which will help support the Government’s ambitious packaging recycling targets that we as a company are in favour of.

“On a bigger level, what we’d like to see is our growing industry develop further, with the creation of hundreds of new green jobs giving a massive boost to the UK’s low carbon economy. MPs from all parties should be in favour of this which is why we’re asking for their backing.”

The campaign has already been backed by Conservative MP Zac Goldsmith, Labour MP Alan Whitehead and the Mayor of London Boris Johnson.
