London-based plastics recycler Closed Loop Recycling has said that it backs the introduction of tough plastic packaging targets.
This is in contrast to a number of plastics trade bodies that believe the targets are unachievable.
Closed Loop Recycling chief executive Chris Dow said: “We support the Defra recycling targets which resulted from a comprehensive consultation programme.
“The targets will ensure the utilisation of existing spare capacity and will encourage investment in new capacity and jobs, subject to the Government underpinning the targets with a robust materials recycling facility code of practice, resolution of the flaws in the PERN system and stricter enforcement action against illegal exports of poorly sorted and unsorted waste materials.”
New packaging targets for the period 2013 to 2017 were approved by Parliament yesterday and will become active from January.
