Compostable shopping bags will be rolled out at more Co-operative Food stores following a successful trial.

Once used to transport goods home, the bags can then be used as food waste bin liners as they carry the seedling logo showing they can be composted.

The bags will incur a 6p charge and according to the Co-operative are cheaper than buying a roll of compostable food waste bin liners. They will now be available at 400 stores.

Co-operative Food environment manager Iain Ferguson said: “Every compostable carrier bag used is one less conventional plastic shopping bag in circulation.

“We believe they will have a significant impact upon the number of plastic bags which end up in landfill sites every year.

“Our aim is to enable our customers to recycle more of the products they buy from us – from the leftover food and packaging, right through to the bag they use to carry their shopping home.”
