Cumbria’s Copeland Council has been forced to suspend collection of cardboard at recycling banks following contamination of meat.

Last month a large amount of meat was found dumped inside a cardboard recycling bank in Whitehaven and the same thing has happened again in a different bank.

Meat along with household and trade waste has been found in other banks and the council has been forced to suspend the service until it can find ways to prevent the contamination happening.

Copeland Borough Council waste and enforcement manager Janice Carrol said: “After people have spent time and effort to separate their recyclable waste and bring it to the centres, the irresponsible actions of a few people results in the materials being unfit for recycling.”
