Council scraps card-recycling banks

A Welsh local authority is to remove card banks from its community recycling sites to focus on kerbside collection of the material.

Powys County Council said the large bins represented a “duplication of service” and were contaminated by criminals and used illegally by businesses.

Conceding that the banks had “regular users”, the local authority nonetheless said the move would help it focus “stretched resources” on household collections.

“The decision to remove card recycling banks was agreed by the cabinet earlier this year,” said Jackie Charlton, the council’s cabinet member for a Greener Powys.

“Although initially identified as a budget saving, it is also a duplication of service.

“The removal therefore allows us to concentrate our stretched resources on fulfilling the weekly kerbside collections.”

Charlton said card could “easily” be recycled every week from home and additional containers could be ordered for the material.

She added: “Larger amounts of card can still be taken to any of the five household waste recycling centres across Powys.”
