Coveris cuts plastic with board-based trays for meat and fish

Packaging producer Coveris has launched a board-based container for chilled meat and fish.

The Austrian firm, which has offices across the UK, said its BarrierFresh MAP tray used 90 per cent less plastic than previous solutions.

It said the new packaging combined sustainably sourced board with a specially developed ethylene vinyl alcohol barrier film.

This delivered a printable, hermetically sealed container that maintains product integrity and recyclability, said Coveris.

With a 21-day shelf-life, the modified-atmosphere packaging is designed for breaded poultry, meat and fish as well as prepared food.

“BarrierFresh MAP trays are lightweight, stackable and compatible with many existing machinery lines, subject to application,” said the manufacturer.

Will Mercer, research and development director for paper at Coveris, hailed “a unique breakthrough” that slashed plastic use.

“The launch of BarrierFresh MAP trays aligns perfectly with no-waste vision and supports the industry’s growing demand for reduced-plastic alternatives,” he added.
