An energy from waste facility just on the border of Croydon has received support from councillors on its planning committee.

Viridor intends to build a 26MW energy from waste facility on the site of its existing landfill site at Beddington in south London.

Although the facility is located in the neighbouring borough of Sutton, it borders with Croydon and so the latter council has also consulted on its construction.

Indeed, Viridor currently operates the 30 year contract for the South London Waste Partnership to treat residual waste for the London Boroughs of Croydon, Sutton, Merton and Kingston.

Councillors in Croydon voted six to five in favour of supporting the planning application put forward by Viridor.

A decision will be made by the London Borough of Sutton at its development control committee next month.
