Packaging giant DS Smith has created a recyclable cardboard-based container to protect medicinal products during transport.
The firm said the dimensions and characteristics of its TailorTemp solution had been determined by a parametric algorithm and tested in an independent laboratory.
The packaging will allow delicate items to be moved around and maintained at carefully controlled temperatures for up to 36 hours, added the firm.
DS Smith innovation product manager Marlena Hardy said: “TailorTemp demonstrates just how versatile and reliable fibre-based material can be, not only to maintain temperatures in cold chain logistics but to deliver a recyclable outcome for customers seeking to meet sustainability targets.”
She added: “Design is everything, and our team is using specialist predictive modelling in the creation solutions for our pharma customers that are fit for purpose and then validating them in the laboratory without delay.
“We are delighted to have hit the crucial 36-hour milestone for cold chain storage and transportation, but the team is already hard at work on extending this to an even longer time period.
“We think we will soon be able to extend TailorTemp’s ability to maintain cool temperatures to 96 hours and above”.
DS Smith last summer announced revenue of £6.8bn for the 12 months to 30 April 2024. However, the London-based firm reported a sharp drop in pre-tax profit for the same period.
