DS Smith has committed £48 million to a fibre preparation line for its Kemsley paper mill.
The new system will supply recycled fibre to the packaging giant’s PM3 paper machine at the Kent plant.
A drum pulping and screening system that efficiently separates contaminants such as plastics, barriers and coatings will also be installed.
PM3 produces white top test liner, plasterboard liner and other corrugated case materials grades.
The new system offers “significant environmental benefits” according to the company, maximising the recycling of materials while reducing water usage and energy consumption.
“Kemsley paper mill is an important part of our business and of the UK’s recycling capacity, recycling up to one million tonnes of paper and card every year,” said DS Smith head of paper and recycling Niels Flierman.
“The installation of the new fibre preparation line will ensure that we can continue to make high performing papers more efficiently while delivering on our medium and long-term sustainability goals.”
DS Smith aims to send zero waste to landfill by 2030.
