Electricals-repair service to expand with Lottery cash

A social enterprise is to bring repair workshops to three London high streets after receiving more than £1 million in National Lottery funding.

The Restart Project intends to expand into Acton, Haringey and either Hackney or Islington with the grant.

The Brixton-based organisation launched Fixing Factories in Brent and Camden in 2022, with the latter expected to stay open on a permanent basis.

People can bring broken electrical appliances to these spaces to have them fixed for free and gain skills for future repairs.

Almost three in four Londoners would rather resolve problems with their electronics than replace them, according to The Restart Project.

But two-thirds of those polled cited a scarcity of repair shops near them.

The organisation said its four sites would develop blueprints for future Fixing Factories around the UK.

“This project would not be possible without the grant awarded by the National Lottery, Climate Action Fund, a £100m commitment over 10 years from The National Lottery Community Fund, which distributes money raised by National Lottery players for good causes,” it added.
