Environmental Audit Committee names new chair

Toby Perkins has been elected chair of the Environmental Audit Committee.

The Labour MP for Chesterfield and Staveley will lead the cross-party panel charged with holding government policy to account against sustainability metrics.

The committee earlier this year said it was “disappointed” with the “very limited nature” of the former government’s proposals to address electronic waste.

Perkins said this month that he was “honoured” to be elected chair of the new-look panel.

“I have a personal stake in our country’s efforts to respond to the dual climate and nature crises,” he added. “The community I serve was badly hit by flooding in 2007 and 2023.”

The former shadow environment minister said he was a “passionate advocate for action on climate and nature”.

He added: “I care deeply about these issues, and I am intent on making sure the government delivers on its promises.

“As chair, I will work across party lines and with communities, businesses and experts to lead a committee focused squarely on finding solutions to the environmental challenges we face.”
