Cornwall Council has decided not to give European Metal Recycling (EMR) planning permission for a new scrap yard, despite the facility getting backing from the council’s planning inspectors.

EMR wished to get planning permission for the site in Redruth after withdrawing an application in 2011 in order to undertake environmental surveys.

The company was seeking to change the planning permission for a site that had already been granted permission for six industrial units on the site, although no development had taken place.

In its place, it wanted to build an end-of-life treatment plant and non-ferrous recycling facility.

However, councillors on the strategic planning committee voted eight to one against the application on the basis that more jobs were likely to be created if the six industrial units are eventually developed.
